In 1960 the world was introduced to North Lake Tahoe and Squaw Valley when the little West Coast mountain won the opportunity to host the VIII Winter Olympics. Fifty years later, the tight-knit community with small town personality and international prestige is set to honor its humble beginnings with the Olympic Heritage Celebration January 8-17, 2010.

Squaw’s “60/50 celebration” kicks off opening day, November 21, when professional skier and base jumper JT Holmes base jumps out of the resort’s legendary cable car.
The official Olympic Heritage Celebration begins with a Commemorative Relay to Squaw Valley and Opening Ceremony complete with live music, fireworks and the 1960 Olympians’ Reception January 8, 2010. Other events are held throughout North Lake Tahoe including the Olympic cross-country races originally held on the West Shore.
The ten-day celebration also includes a Biathlon Reenactment January 9, Cross Country Demo and Expo January 10 and Biathlon “Citizens Against the Clock” January 16, all held at Sugar Pine Point State Park on the West Shore.
Alpine Meadows Ski Resort, which kicks off the season December 5, hosts a Freestyle Moguls Competition as part of the commemorative events January 12. Sugar Bowl Ski Resort on Donner Summit hosts the Silver Belt Luncheon and Ski Tour January 12, and also offers a new Summit Chair to Mt. Judah this winter. Granlibakken Resort, a ski area just outside of Tahoe City whose history goes back to the heyday of Tahoe Tavern, holds the 1960 Nordic Olympian Dinner January 15.
There are many ongoing events that include interpretive programs on the mountain at Squaw Valley USA and at Sugar Pine Point State Park as well as temporary museum exhibits, Squaw Valley Institute Winter Film Festival and the culmination of the celebration with a 1960 Olympians’ Ball at the four-star Resort at Squaw Creek in Olympic Valley.

Twenty active-duty U.S. soldiers and marines hit the slopes Wednesday, March 11, Friday, March 13, and Saturday, March 14 for the Wounded Warrior Ability Camp at Disabled Sports USA, located at Lake Tahoe’s Alpine Meadows Ski Resort, for ski and snowboard lessons. Disabled in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, service members will visit Disabled Sports from Brook Army Medical Center (San Antonio, Texas) and Balboa Naval Hospital (San Diego, California), two major rehabilitation centers for service who have been injured during service. Ski and snowboard instruction at Disabled Sports is part of their rehabilitation program.
“It’s important that we reach recently disabled service members early in the rehabilitation process,” said Haakon Lang-Ree, Program Director at Disabled Sports. Disabled Sports specializes in ski/snowboard instruction for students with physical and mental disabilities; and the visiting military students have all incurred disabilities during combat in Iraq ranging from limb loss to brain trauma. “It’s important to expose them early to what they can do,” Lang-Ree added.
Disabled Sports works directly with the Wounded Warrior Project (or WWP), a nationwide foundation that offers assistance to severely injured and disabled service members. Some of the many WWP programs provide rehabilitation through outdoor adventure, including skiing and snowboarding. With a mission to provide access to unique, direct programs, WWP sought the expertise of the Disabled Sports Chapter located at Alpine Meadows.
Teaching disabled service members to ski in 2009 has brought the mission of Disabled Sports full-circle. The chapter was founded by the World War II 10th Mountain Division in 1967 in order to offer support and rehabilitation to service members disabled during the Vietnam Conflict. Today, Disabled Sports continues to offer ski instruction to disabled service members as well as any student living with paraplegia, quadriplegia, amputation, autism, multiple sclerosis, visual impairment, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, head injuries, and muscular dystrophy.
In addition to the Wounded Warrior Ability Camp, Disabled Sports has scheduled a full week of skiing, snowboarding, racing, and parties – all open to the public - starting March 10 through March 14.
