The following information was taken from a detailed economic impact report prepared for the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association by Dean Runyan Associates in December 2003. The study applies to the Eastern Placer County region of North Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe in its entirety is surrounded by two states (California and Nevada) and four counties (Placer, Douglas, El Dorado and Washoe).
Lake Tahoe is also impacted by neighboring communities, such as Truckee, California and Reno, Nevada, which are not represented below. The Placer County, California jurisdiction of North Lake Tahoe consists of Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Homewood, Northstar, Squaw Valley (all located in California) and other unincorporated areas and neighborhoods.

The majority of dollars spent were on recreation (skiing, golfing, boating, etc.) Of the $355 million total spent, $128 million was spent on recreation. $74 million went specifically to lodging; $75 million on eating and drinking in restaurants, bars and taverns; and $79 million was spent on retail, including grocery stores and gas stations.

There are 1,500 rooms or units available through hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts. There are approximately 1,500 condos or vacation rentals for rent and more than 500 campsites. There are an estimated 7,825 vacation homes (not considered primary residence for the owner). Vacation homes comprise 55 percent of the housing units in North Lake Tahoe.
