NORTH TAHOE VISITOR STATISTICS/FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS


The following information was taken from a detailed economic impact report prepared for the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association by Dean Runyan Associates in December 2003. The study applies to the Eastern Placer County region of North Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe in its entirety is surrounded by two states (California and Nevada) and four counties (Placer, Douglas, El Dorado and Washoe).

Lake Tahoe is also impacted by neighboring communities, such as Truckee, California and Reno, Nevada, which are not represented below. The Placer County, California jurisdiction of North Lake Tahoe consists of Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Homewood, Northstar, Squaw Valley (all located in California) and other unincorporated areas and neighborhoods.

What is the population of North Lake Tahoe?

In 2000 the population totaled 14,887, which showed a 3.2 percent increase from 1990.

What is the median household income?

How many residents are employed by the travel industry?

What is the economic impact of the visitor industry to North Lake Tahoe?

Visitors spent $355 million in 2002.

How do visitors spend their money?

The majority of dollars spent were on recreation (skiing, golfing, boating, etc.) Of the $355 million total spent, $128 million was spent on recreation. $74 million went specifically to lodging; $75 million on eating and drinking in restaurants, bars and taverns; and $79 million was spent on retail, including grocery stores and gas stations.

What is the breakdown of lodging properties?

There are 1,500 rooms or units available through hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts. There are approximately 1,500 condos or vacation rentals for rent and more than 500 campsites. There are an estimated 7,825 vacation homes (not considered primary residence for the owner). Vacation homes comprise 55 percent of the housing units in North Lake Tahoe.

Six (Alpine Meadows, Homewood Mountain Ski Resort, Northstar-at-Tahoe, Squaw Valley, U.S.A., Sugar Bowl Ski Resort, Granlibakken Resort). The North Lake Tahoe Resort Association also represents Diamond Peak and Mt. Rose, which are located in Nevada.

The sun shines 75 percent (274 days) each year and receives an average of 400 inches of snow (at the Lake’s 6,225 elevation) annually. The mean temperatures range from 30 (January) to 61 (August) degrees. Average highs during those months are 40 and 77 degrees, respectively.

Where is Lake Tahoe located?

Lake Tahoe straddles California’s eastern and Nevada’s western state lines (2/3 of the Lake lies with in California, 1/3 in Nevada). Situated in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, it is 200 miles northeast of San Francisco, 98 miles northeast of Sacramento, and 45 miles southwest of Reno.

It is 12 miles wide, 22 miles long and has 72 miles of shoreline. It is the eighth largest lake in the world and largest alpine lake in North America. Lake Tahoe is the second deepest lake in the U.S with an average depth of 989 feet and deepest point of 1,645 feet.
