GET YOUR SKIS WAXED, 6 FEET OF NEW SNOW IN NORTH TAHOE
(NORTH LAKE TAHOE, California/Nevada) – Old Man Winter is back.
North Lake Tahoe ski resorts welcomed up to 6 feet of new snow at their higher elevations after a four-day series of storms hit the region.
“Weather in North Lake Tahoe is like nowhere else,” said Chief Marketing Officer Andy Chapman of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association. “It changes on a dime. This latest cold front brought snow blowing up, down and all around, but when it settled (today), we awoke to blue skies and tons of powder on the slopes.”
And the fair weather continues through Thursday with a slight chance of snow Friday and then Saturday and Sunday with mostly sunny skies.
“This weekend is ‘the’ weekend,” said Chapman. “We are experiencing the best conditions of the winter. There has never been a better time to ski or snowboard Tahoe.”
Many North Lake Tahoe ski resorts have been open since December due to significant capital improvements in snowmaking, but those that rely solely on Mother Nature were able to open their doors to eager winter enthusiasts yesterday and today.
In Tahoe City, Tahoe Cross Country opened yesterday (January 23), with Royal Gorge Cross Country (the largest cross country resort in the U.S.), Tahoe Donner Cross Country and Tahoe Donner Downhill opening today. On Donner Summit, the family-owned Donner Ski Ranch is planning to open tomorrow, Wednesday.
It just got a little easier for Bay Area residents to fly into the Reno-Tahoe International Airport with new daily service from San Jose via Alaska Airlines. The new service further connects the airport with Alaska’s western routes between Los Angeles, Seattle, Hawaii and beyond. To celebrate Alaska’s new service, the carrier is offering $69 fares on flights between San Jose and Reno. Tickets must be purchased by January 25 and used for travel from June 5 through July 18, 2012. The Reno-Tahoe International Airport is a 45-minute drive from North Lake Tahoe. The North Lake Tahoe Express also provides daily VIP airport service from Reno-Tahoe.
