• At 1PM Saturday, September 15th, the festivities move outside our own backyard or courtyard rather where our Silence of the Hams crew come together with local chefs and showcase their culinary BBQ creations through some friendly competition. Our chefs will have spent the entire night preparing several different smoked offerings. One menu highlight that will be served is Cochon De Lait, one of Acadiana’s most famous and delectable dishes—marinated, pit roasted young suckling pig thin sliced and served on a po-boy. A staple at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival this dish is not to be missed! In addition to the good eats there will be adult beverages (and beverages for the kiddos), live music from 3PM to 7PM featuring the funk-rock sounds of local faves Jellybread and smooth live hip-hop/jazz from Las Vegas’s The Lique. Also featured is a silent auction with items generously donated from local businesses. Out outdoor BBQ will run from 1Pm to 8PM, admission is free, all ages are welcome and proceeds from the food & drink sales and silent auction all benefit the Hogs for the Cause Foundation.
• On Saturday evening and following the outdoor feasting, we will be capping off our Hogs for the Cause Weekend with a ticketed show in our Crown Room showcasing The Dean Ween Group (of the band Ween)! Tickets are $25 advance and $30 day of show; Doors 8PM; Show 9PM (21 and over). Plus catch the Red Room after party featuring Gene Evaro Jr! Hogs for the Cause is a 501c (3) nonprofit organization that began in 2009, when a group of folks hosted a pig roast in a park to raise money for a boy named Ben Sarrat. Ben had been diagnosed with an incurable form of brain cancer. In that first year, roughly 200 people showed up to watch a pig turn slowly on a spit and raise money to help Ben’s family. Fast-forward a few short years (nine to be exact) and Hogs for the Cause is now one of the largest barbecue competitions and music festivals in the country. Their charitable purpose remains the same: helping families fighting pediatric brain cancer. This past March the New Orleans event drew 80+ teams competing in various barbecue competitions, over 30,000 supporters and raised 1.3 million dollars. Our Silence of the Hams team won first place this year in the Whole Hog competition. 100% of the funds raised are returned as grants to families in need of financial assistance during their struggle. In 2017 Hogs for the Cause West was able to assist two Northern Nevada families through the Renown pediatric oncology department.
