WHAT’S NEW IN NORTH LAKE TAHOE: SUMMER 2014

North Lake Tahoe is one of the most coveted destinations in the country.  Find out what’s new for summer 2014.

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (Summer 2014) – North Lake Tahoe resorts never fail in delivering new and exciting entertainment options in time for the summer season. Summer 2014 is certainly no exception. From Hyatt Regency’s unique Line-to-Table fishing-dining experience to Homewood’s speedy new watercraft additions, there’s an activity to suit anyone’s liking.

Part of the appeal of Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino is its prime location on the northeast shore of Lake Tahoe. Taking advantage of this locale, the resort will offer guests an opportunity to book a fishing charter on Lake Tahoe and enjoy their catch prepared freshly by Chef Shane Hammett at the award-winning Lone Eagle Grille.

Fish are cleaned on one of the two charter boats — the 28-foot “Reel Action” or the 22-foot “Delta Angler,” both from Action Watersports. Guests then have the option of packaging the catch to bring home or hand-delivering it to Hammett, who discusses the best way to prepare the fish. Options include simply baking the fish whole in a Chinese style for a crisped skin, or filet grilling.

Combine the service with the panoramic views of Lake Tahoe and wines from the Lone Eagle Grille, and it’s an experience like no other on the North Shore.

Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino also recently completed major renovations to its luxurious Lakeside Cottages. The $3.6 million in upgrades, led by Simeone Deary Design Group, includes a total of 48 rooms in 12 lakeside buildings, with new millwork, refreshed wall coverings, new furniture and artwork, and decorative lighting.

“The recent upgrades to our Lakeside Cottages bring a new warmth and modern appeal to these one-of-a-kind accommodations,” said Fred Findlen, general manager of the resort. “We want to set the highest standard for our guests, and the refreshed cottages truly deliver that by providing a quintessential Lake Tahoe experience.”

The cottages range in price from $350 a night during the slow season to $1,899 during the summer high season.

Not far away on Lake Tahoe’s pristine east shore, the historic Thunderbird Lodge — built in the 1930s by eccentric millionaire George Whittell — will offer public tours of the home’s magnificent four-tiered waterfall constructed by Native American stone masons.

Thunderbird Lodge Preservation Society restored the waterfall in 2013, and it stands out among the highlights of the estate tours.

Guests may arrive by shuttle, boat or kayak for the 90-minute tour, which includes about a 1/3-mile walk and costs $39 per person and $19 for children. Public tours of the lodge begin May 20 and continue Tuesday through Saturday until Oct. 18. Reservations are required.

The first three weekends of August, classical music lovers will be treated to the Lake Tahoe SummerFest series at Sierra Nevada College. The concert series features Metropolitan Opera star Matthew Polenzani and U.S. Billboard Classical Chart best-selling pianist Simone Dinnerstein.

In addition to the series’ two evening shows, Friday and Saturday, both beginning at 7 p.m., a new chamber music series called “Meet the Music” will take place on Sundays at 4 p.m. Polenzani will headline the show Aug. 1-3 and Dinnerstein from Aug. 7-9.

Also new to the series, the “Meet the Music/Meet the Musicians” Sunday concerts will bring the artists and their audiences closer together as the musicians explore weekly themes based on the classical music centers of Europe.

“We began with a vision to make Tahoe a summer destination for arts and culture and we are continuing to deliver on that promise,” said Madylon Meiling, Lake Tahoe SummerFest founder and chair. “Ticket sales have grown every year and our patrons come from all over California, Nevada and from as far away as Texas and Arizona. The event’s success speaks to the quality of the experience.”

Homewood Mountain Resort and the West Shore Cafe also have new happenings slated for summer 2014.

The West Shore Cafe will offer three new personal watercrafts rentals from SWA Watersports, bolstering its fleet that includes a wooden boat, a fishing boat and a ski boat, all buoyed off of the West Shore Cafe pier.

The cafe also expanded its bar on the outdoor deck in order to provide a better experience for guests. The interior bar was stretched into an L shape, giving patrons a panoramic view of Lake Tahoe as they indulge in craft cocktails and apps.

Homewood has hosted the Lakefront Outdoor Yoga Series in past summers, but this summer, the resort will offer the yoga series on the pier of the West Shore Cafe every Wednesday and Saturday morning. The series runs from June to August.

In addition, Homewood will host three Farm to Peak dinners on the mountain overlooking Lake Tahoe. Guests will ride a chairlift to the top of the mountain, where they will be treated to a five-course seasonal farm-to-table dinner complete with wine or beer pairings, with guest chefs incorporating the freshest locally sourced ingredients.

The Farm to Peak dinners will take place July 5, Aug. 9 and Aug. 30 and are limited to 120 guests.

Visitors and local travelers alike should be aware of the “Core of the Core” construction project in Kings Beach, which is expected to begin in April and stretch until Sept. 7. The work will include a new roundabout, a conversion from four lanes to three, a drainage system and surface improvements including sidewalks.

While crews hope to limit disruptions to traffic, delays of up to 20 minutes are possible. For more information about the “Core of the Core” project, go to www.kingsbeachcore.info.
